The Brother XL-5340 was/is my first sewing machine. For that reason I can't really say whether or not it's the fanciest thing in the world, but man oh man can I attest to it's sheer, epic, STRENGTH!!! I bought it used about 5 years ago (2013), so it had already been run quite a bit, but was (and still is) in excellent condition.... Let's just say that as a beginner sewist, I wasn't exactly kind to this poor guy! It took some time before I was experienced enough to run everything correctly, and for all that time I was experimenting, I was pretty much tearin' it up! But no sign of that from the machine! Nope! You'd think it was brand new still.... Purr's like a kitten..... I beat the ever lovin' heck of this guy, just about every time I turned him on, for the first 3 yrs I owned him... It's tough trying to learn how to use a sewing machine, let alone actually make something..... But this guy has never let me down! He was apparently made to withstand even the worst of operator errors! Besides one incident where my upper thread broke, and got stuck inside the crank inside, I've had no problems (opened it right up and got it out - it's actually very easy to take apart and clean up, and I'm not usually willing to even TRY working on anything mechanical! Nor is my husband.).... Beating after beating though, my Brother XL-5340 always starts right up, stitches like a dream, and has taught me so much..... I learned how to thread it and work the functions, through some youtube tutorials, and found it very easy to maneuver... The owners manual is still available for free online too, which is nice... I'm thinking about upgrading to something newer and bigger, with even more stitch options now, just cuz, but honestly, I don't need to.. I just want to... There's nothing this machine can't do (as far as I've found anyways), and I don't even use half the stitch options as it is... Part of me wants to try out something new, but part of me also wonders if I'd end up regretting trying to replace Old Faithful. I have to wonder if other machines could even hold up to my beatings like he has.... Come to think of it, even if I did get a new one, I don't think I could part with him...
